Our extensive network of providers is coordinated by a dedicated leadership team consisting of medical professionals who understand both the clinical and business sides of health care. Each member of our Board of Directors is committed to ensuring we fulfill our mission of supporting community members in their health and wellness. 2017 Governing Board

Peter Kaye, MD | Gastroenterology, Chair

Dr. Peter Kaye currently serves as the Boulder Valley Care Network Chair. He has also served as the Vice-President of Gastroenterology of the Rockies, the largest gastroenterology group in Boulder County. Board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, Dr. Kaye is a graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine as well as a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of California, San Diego. He is also a Staff Member of Endoscopy Center of the Rockies and an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Nelson Trujillo, MD | Cardiology, Vice Chair

Dr. Trujillo currently serves as the Boulder Valley Care Network Vice Chair and BCH President of Medical Staff. He joined the BCH Medical Staff in 1997. He is a member of Boulder Heart, the largest cardiology group in Boulder County. Board certified in cardiovascular medicine, nuclear medicine and internal medicine. Dr. Trujillo is a graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine as well as fellowships in cardiology and nuclear medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Elizabeth Cruse, MD | Internal Medicine

Dr. Cruse is a board-certified internist who focuses on the treatment and prevention of adult illnesses and injuries. She received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at the University of Rochester. Her undergraduate degree is from Brown University. Before moving to Boulder, Dr. Cruse practiced hospital medicine and academic medicine in Houston. She served on the Boulder Community Health medical staff credentialing committee for several years, and is actively involved in the hospital ambulatory clinic’s quality program.

Trey Dodson, MD | Family Medicine

Dr. Dodson was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and grew up in Plano, Texas. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1988 and completed medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1992. In 1995, he switched paths from surgery to family medicine and completed his residency in Albuquerque in 2000.

In 2001, Dr. Dodson joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico and became an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, as well as Associate Program Director of the family medicine residency program. Dr. Dodson moved to Boulder in 2009 and served as Program Director of a family medicine residency program in Denver. He joined Dakota Ridge Family Medicine in October of 2011. Dr. Dodson lives in Boulder with his family. He is an avid reader, snowboarder and enjoys keeping up with technology. He plays guitar and is learning to play the ipu heke.

Rich Fey | BVIPA CEO

Mark Hickey, MD | Sleep Medicine

Dr. Hickey is the founder of the Colorado Sleep Institute (formerly Rem Sleep Medicine PC), which was established in 2010 to provide truly comprehensive care for the full spectrum of sleep disorders.

Dr. Hickey is a Mayo-trained Neurologist and is both fellowship-trained & board-certified in Sleep Medicine. He is devoted to the full-time practice of Sleep Medicine.

After graduating from the University of South Florida College of Medicine Dr. Hickey pursued a residency in adult Neurology at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Thereafter he completed a fellowship program in Sleep Medicine at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

Dr. Hickey was an Assistant Professor of Sleep Medicine in the Department of Neurology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center prior to founding the Colorado Sleep Institute in 2010.

At the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Hickey serves in three capacities: consultant to the AASM Health Policy Strategy Presidential Committee, Welltrinsic Board member, and AASM legislative liaison. At the Boulder Valley Individual Practice Association he is both a Board member and Credentials Committee member. At the Boulder Valley Care Network he serves as a Board member. He is an active member Colorado Medical Society and Boulder County Medical Society.

When not working, Dr. Hickey enjoys spending time with his family camping, hiking and fishing.

Gus Isuani, MD | Radiology

Dr. Gus Isuani joined our practice in September 2003. He graduated from medical school at Baylor

College of Medicine in 1991 and completed an internship in internal medicine in 1992. His four years of radiology residency was in Pennsylvania. Dr. Isuani subsequently did a neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Syste

m. After six years of private practice in Texas, he finally saw the light and moved to Colorado.

In addition to his neuroradiology skills, Gus is fluent in Spanish and is learning French while watching Pinocchio with his daughter.

Gus, his wife and daughter enjoy hiking and traveling, but most particularly they love the scenery and weather in Colorado, which reminds them of their hometown of Mendoza, Argentina.

Jamie Jensen | BCH Administration

Jamie has been with BCH since 1994 and has more than 25 years’ experience in health care and ambulatory administration. Jamie is well versed in the demands of the ever-changing health care environment and applies strategic thinking to ensure the ongoing success of BCH. Prior to becoming Chief Operating Officer, Jamie held multiple positions at BCH, including the Chief Executive Officer for Community Medical Services Organization and the health system’s Director of Ambulatory Operations.

Prior to joining BCH, Jamie held health care management positions throughout the Denver Metro area. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Care Administration and has served on the boards of directors of the Boulder County Aids Project, Foothills United Way and, most recently, TRU Community Care. Jamie is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and Medical Group Management Association.

Bob Jamieson | Commercial Insurance Products

Ben Keidan, MD | Internal Medicine

Ben started his role as Chief Medical Officer at BCH in 2018 and is excited to continue his focus on patient safety, quality and patient and care team experience. Ben is an internal medicine physician who has been on staff with BCH for over 10 years and has previously worked as both a primary care and hospital medicine physician. Prior to 2018, he was the Medical Director for Quality and Population Health for the BCH employed physician group where he focused on improving the value (high quality, affordable health care) with an emphasis on improving communication and collaboration amongst health care teams and with patients.

Originally from suburban Detroit, he studied history at the University of Michigan and earned his MD from Wayne State University. He completed his residency and served as Chief Medical Resident at George Washington University, followed by practicing internal medicine and hospital medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and joining the teaching faculty of Harvard Medical School.

Ben is married and has two daughters. He enjoys trail running, swimming and skiing, as well as live music and cooking.

Mary Louder, DO | Family Medicine

As an Osteopathic Family Physician, I believe strongly in the doctor patient relationship. There is sacredness to that relationship, a trust, and an agreement to team with patients for their healing and wholeness. This takes many forms, acute disease management, prevention, wellness and wholeness. The body has the inherent capacity to heal itself, adding tools, awareness and understanding allows for this process to unfold. Working with a physician who has a knowledge base of traditional/western medicine and integrative/holistic medicine is a fantastic combination.

My training includes B.S. from the University of Montana, graduate work at Michigan State University and a D. O. degree from Michigan State University. My Internship training occurred in Lansing, Michigan and Family Medicine Residency occurred in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am double boarded in Family Medicine and Integrative Holistic Medicine. I provide all manner of primary care from a holistic perspective and use Osteopathic Manipulation.

My practice is located in Lafayette, CO and I live in Longmont, CO with my husband Andy and our Labradoodle Lucy. I love the outdoors, hiking, biking and fly-fishing. I enjoy reading research and applying the clinical pearls that I glean from the articles. I have had experience in teaching, administration and clinical practice since 1993. I believe the most important aspect of health care is the relationship you can have with your physician or provider, working together for your healing and wholeness.

Adam Palazzari, MD | Pediatrics

Dr. Palazzari started Lafayette Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in 2011. Originally from Minnesota, he received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. He attended the University of Minnesota Medical School where he earned his M.D. and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society. In 2005, he completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following residency, he worked as an Academic Hospitalist at UNC for a year, before moving to Colorado. Here, Dr. Palazzari worked at Broomfield Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, in Broomfield, CO, transforming it from a pediatrics-only clinic to a full Med/Peds clinic. He is board certified in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. Dr. Palazzari has courtesy staff privileges at The Children’s Hospital and admitting staff privileges at Avista Adventist Hospital and Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP).

Dr. Palazzari lives in Lafayette with his wife Kari and their sons Finn and Felix. His is an avid downhill skier and enjoys hiking, mountain biking, camping and photography.

Mark Twietmeyer | Medicare Insurance Products

Rev. Mark Twietmeyer has been serving the faith community of Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Boulder as Senior Pastor since 1992. He graduated from Christ Seminary, Seminex in St. Louis, Missouri with his Masters of Divinity degree and served congregations in Chicago and Oak Forest, IL before coming to Trinity Lutheran.

As part of the Trinity Lutheran faith community, Mark holds that faith is contextual. Faith is always lived out in the context of one's relationships, community, and setting. Faith always moves us to action. As a member of the downtown Boulder community, Trinity is working to live its faith by helping to serve Boulder's homeless in several different facets as well as building permanently affordable senior housing on its parking lot. In addition Trinity has built and given away over 50 homes in Juarez, Mexico to families needing housing.

Mark lives in Louisville with his wife Lynn and enjoys spending time with their four grandchildren in all their various activities.

Jason Cannell, DO | BVCN Medical Director (ex officio)

Board certified in Family Medicine, Dr. Cannell received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. He completed his residency in Family Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Cannell served 15 years with the Department of Defense in various capacities to include as a Special Operations Flight Surgeon. Upon completion of his military career he transitioned to full time practice as a Family Medicine Physician with Boulder Community Health. During his tenure with Boulder Community Health he served in many Physician leadership roles to include that as the Medical Director of Field Operations before assuming the responsibilities as the Medical Director of Boulder Valley Care Network. Additionally, Dr. Cannell is an Associate Professor for Rocky Vista University, a medical preceptor for University of Colorado School of Medicine, a Senior Aeromedical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration, and a Physician for USA Boxing. Dr. Cannell continues to practice part time Family Medicine at Boulder Creek Family Medicine. He lives in Boulder County with his wife and two daughters, and enjoys all forms of recreational activities to include hiking, cycling and running.

Ben Dzialo | BVCN Executive Director (ex officio)

Ben joined the BVCN as Executive Director in 2016. Prior to that, he worked as a Senior Consultant in Clinical Integration for Trinity Health in Livonia, Michigan where he supported the development and operations of 17 CINs throughout the nation. He also has experience in practice management, change leadership, process excellence, Joint Commission regulations, and implementation of patient-centered medical homes. His passion is driving service excellence while also reducing healthcare costs. He completed his Administrative Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he supported the organization’s recovery from Hurricane Ike. He received his Master in Health Service Administration from the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health’s Management and Policy Program and his Bachelor in Art in History of Science, History of Medicine from Yale University. At Yale, he was a 4-year varsity member on the swim team, where he held the varsity record in the 200 yard butterfly and was awarded the Yale Men’s Swimming Ivy League Scholar Athlete of the Year. He lives in Boulder with Zena, his American Eskimo, enjoys cycling and still swims from time to time.

Bill Munson | BVCNTreasurer, BCH CFO (ex officio)

Bill Munson has served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Boulder Community Health since 2008 where he has responsibility for most financial management functions, and is responsible for operational support services such as Case Management, Materials Management, Security and Emergency Management, and Facilities Management. Prior to joining BCH, Mr. Munson served as Chief Financial Officer at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado for 15 years. Prior to 1993, he served in financial management positions for Humana hospitals in Overland Park, Kansas; Huntington Beach, California; Anchorage, Alaska, and in Layton, Utah. Mr. Munson has also served as an adjunct professor for the Master’s Program in Healthcare Administration at the University of Kansas. He received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Colorado Christian University. Bill is also certified in Healthcare Compliance with the Healthcare Compliance Association. Bill serves on the board of directors for several organizations that provide needed community services in the areas of outpatient surgery, sports medicine, and hospital laundry. He also serves in leadership roles on the Finance and Audit Committees for Captis which is a member driven supply network for 80+ hospitals and healthcare systems. Bill has served on two medical mission trips with Boulder Community Health in Mante, Mexico.

Bill grew up in Colorado Springs. He lives with his wife and has two daughters. His interests include horseback riding, hunting and fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. Bill is also a member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders in Colorado Springs.

Rob Vissers, MD | BCH Administration (ex officio)

Dr. Robert Vissers is the Chief Executive Officer of Boulder Community Health, a non-profit, independent health system based in Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Vissers came to Boulder from Portland Oregon as the Chief Operating Officer in 2014 and was named CEO the summer of 2015. He continues to serve as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Instructor in the Division of Management at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Dr. Vissers attended the Residency Program in Emergency Medicine at Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, BC, Canada; was an attending physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School and was the Residency Director of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Prior to his current role, Dr. Vissers was the Chief for Emergency Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at Emanuel Medical Center, a level-one trauma center in Portland, Oregon.

He is a popular speaker at medical conferences, both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Vissers is a national expert in emergency airway management, quality and patient flow and he has authored over 50 book chapters and countless articles on many healthcare topics. He is currently an instructor in the UC Denver HealthCare MBA program and serves on the Colorado Hospital Association Board as the Chair of the CHA Clinical Excellence Committee.

Dr. Vissers resides in Boulder with his wife and four children.

Elizabeth Cruse, MD | Internal Medicine, Chair

John Fleagle, MD | Medical Oncology

John Fleagle was born in Colorado Springs and grew up in central Illinois, where he attended the University of Illinois for undergraduate and medical school. He completed an internal medicine residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago in 1981 and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Colorado in 1983. He is boarded in internal medicine and medical oncology. He entered private practice in 1983 in Boulder and has remained continuously on staff at BCH since then. He has served in various leadership positions since then both at BCH and elsewhere. He served for 16 years on the board of the BVIPA until 2000. He has been the managing partner of Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, LLP, since 2010.

His clinical practice is focused on general medical oncology and in particular primary brain tumors. He is an active participant in clinical research and functions as a principal investigator from time to time. He is a member of the National Policy Board of US Oncology. He actively participates in the US Oncology managed care steering committee. He is involved in the CMMI Oncology Care Model implementation for RMCC, LLP. His professional focus is currently focused on implementation of value based contracts with government and commercial payers. He is a leader in finding solutions to the high cost of cancer care and medical care in general, improving the quality of medical care, and in developing strong medical leadership for the future.

Valerie Lipetz, MD | Internal Medicine

Dr. Lipetz received her medical degree with honors from the University of Colorado in 1988. She also has an M.A. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology from CU.

She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been practicing locally since 1991. Dr. Lipetz enjoys practicing the full spectrum of outpatient general internal medicine. Except for four years in Denver for medical school and a three-year residency in Portland, she has called Boulder home since 1958.

An active community volunteer, Dr. Lipetz has served as president of the American Heart Association's Boulder County Division and BCH's Medical Staff. She serves on the Board of Directors for Mental Health Partners and is Chair of the Boulder County Health Improvement Collaborative. She has served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Boulder Community Health's clinics and continues to be extremely active in Medical Staff affairs.

In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, horseback riding, reading, hiking, and cooking.

Drigan Wieder, MD | Orthopedic Surgery

Dr. Wieder is a Boulder native, and he began his interest in medicine at an early age. When he was about twelve years old, he crushed his finger in a climbing accident and visited with an orthopedist who encouraged his interest by chatting with him about medicine. The orthopedist even offered to let the future Dr. Wieder go on rounds with him!

Dr. Wieder and his wife live in Sunshine Canyon in Boulder with their two children. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys backpacking, fly fishing, skiing, and cycling in the Colorado outdoors.

Mark Wisner | Family Medicine

Dr. Wisner joined Boulder Creek Family Medicine in 2013. The Michigan native received his medical degree from Touro University in California and completed his residency at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver.

He holds an undergraduate degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado.

Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Wisner previously had a solo practice in Boulder. He enjoys serving multiple generations of families and helping his patients return to functional health through osteopathic manipulation used in conjunction with traditional medical techniques when appropriate.

Dr. Wisner has a special interest in pediatrics, men’s health, sports medicine and preventive medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Association.

An avid cyclocross racer, mountain biker, and skier, Dr. Wisner lives in Boulder with his wife, Laura and their two children.

Cathy Higgins came to the BoulderCentre for Orthopedics after 17 years of leading the Boulder Valley Individual Practice Association. Cathy is passionate about the preservation of independent practice in the community in which she lives and raised her family.

Nick Molliconi | BCH Director Decision Support

Nick Molliconi has been with BCH for over 16 years working in Finance, Patient Safety and now as the Director of Enterprise Analytics and Payer Relations. Nick received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Finance/Accounting and both Masters, Master of Business Administration Finance/International Business & Master of Healthcare Administration, from Regis University in Denver. Bill grew up in Colorado Springs. He lives with his wife and has two daughters. His interests include horseback riding, hunting and fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. Bill is also a member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders in Colorado Springs.

John Tobey, MD | Physical Medicine and Rehab

Dr. Tobey is a physiatrist at Spine West in Boulder, CO. He received his medical degree at the University of Utah. His residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Spine and Sports Fellowship were at the University of Colorado. He is also a physician for the U.S. Ski Team.

Ben Dzialo | BVCN Executive Director (ex officio)

Ben joined the BVCN as Executive Director in 2016. Prior to that, he worked as a Senior Consultant in Clinical Integration for Trinity Health in Livonia, Michigan where he supported the development and operations of 17 CINs throughout the nation. He also has experience in practice management, change leadership, process excellence, Joint Commission regulations, and implementation of patient-centered medical homes. His passion is driving service excellence while also reducing healthcare costs. He completed his Administrative Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he supported the organization’s recovery from Hurricane Ike. He received his Master in Health Service Administration from the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health’s Management and Policy Program and his Bachelor in Art in History of Science, History of Medicine from Yale University. At Yale, he was a 4-year varsity member on the swim team, where he held the varsity record in the 200 yard butterfly and was awarded the Yale Men’s Swimming Ivy League Scholar Athlete of the Year. He lives in Boulder with Zena, his American Eskimo, enjoys cycling and still swims from time to time.

Jason Cannell, DO | BVCN Medical Director (ex officio)

Board certified in Family Medicine, Dr. Cannell received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. He completed his residency in Family Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Cannell served 15 years with the Department of Defense in various capacities to include as a Special Operations Flight Surgeon. Upon completion of his military career he transitioned to full time practice as a Family Medicine Physician with Boulder Community Health. During his tenure with Boulder Community Health he served in many Physician leadership roles to include that as the Medical Director of Field Operations before assuming the responsibilities as the Medical Director of Boulder Valley Care Network. Additionally, Dr. Cannell is an Associate Professor for Rocky Vista University, a medical preceptor for University of Colorado School of Medicine, a Senior Aeromedical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration, and a Physician for USA Boxing. Dr. Cannell continues to practice part time Family Medicine at Boulder Creek Family Medicine. He lives in Boulder County with his wife and two daughters, and enjoys all forms of recreational activities to include hiking, cycling and running.

Christopher Fox, MD | Endocrinologist

Dr. Fox returned to the Boulder area in 2003 to be close to family. His primary interest is caring for patients with all types of thyroid disease, with a special interest in patients with Thyroid Cancer. Dr. Fox has specialized training and certification for use of neck ultrasound in the assessment and treatment of Thyroid Nodules and Thyroid Cancer. Outside of medicine, Dr. Fox enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, racing bicycles, and reading.

Mike Jefferies | BCH CIO

Michael Jefferies serves as Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Boulder Community Health where he is responsible for implementing technology solutions that advance provider capabilities and operational efficiency. Michael joined Boulder Community Health in 2016 and has diverse work setting experience including acute care hospitals, consulting, healthcare IT outsourcing, and working for a leading Healthcare IT vendor. Prior to his current role Michael was Vice President of Information Systems at Longmont United Hospital in Boulder County, Colorado and previously worked at ACS/Xerox and McKesson providing IT solutions to hospitals across the country. He is especially passionate about improving the patient experience and giving providers tools to improve the quality of patient care. Michael holds an MBA in Healthcare Administration from the University of Colorado and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado. Michael is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds the designation of Certified Healthcare CIO from CHIME as well as certifications as a PMP and CPHIMS.

When not serving the community professionally Michael enjoys rock climbing, volunteering in mental healthcare, rebuilding classic motorcycles, and enjoying life in Colorado with his wife and two daughters.

Nick Molliconi | BCH Director Decision Support

Nick Molliconi has been with BCH for over 16 years working in Finance, Patient Safety and now as the Director of Enterprise Analytics and Payer Relations. Nick received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Finance/Accounting and both Masters, Master of Business Administration Finance/International Business & Master of Healthcare Administration, from Regis University in Denver. Nick is a Fellow with both the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Healthcare Finance Management Association. He lives in Denver with his two children, and enjoys weightlifting, running and reading historical biographies.

David Whitling | BCH CMIO

Dr. Whitling is a practicing Emergency Physician at Boulder Community Health. He also serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer. He attended the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Denver Health, Colorado. He is Board-Certified in both Emergency Medicine and Clinical Informatics. Dr. Whitling is a practicing Emergency Physician at Boulder Community Health.
